ELLSWORTH — On Thursday, Dec. 30, the Ellsworth Chess Club held its annual New Year’s chess tournament, playing a blitz game/10 format.

In the championship match between Isaac Marnik and Paul Wlodkowski, nobody had a checkmate. A draw was decided, leaving them as co-champs.

Finishing third was Maggie Bryan, edging out Isaiah Fallon, who took fourth.

Half a point behind in fifth was Mark Woida, followed by a three-way tie for sixth through eighth place among Andy Bryan, Paul Wlodkowski Jr. and Dick Powell.

Completing the top 10 were Peter Goebel and the youngest chess player of the evening, Gus Lacasse of the Bay School.

Open chess will be the format for the winter months. New members are welcome, as are players who haven’t been by since the new time change.

Chess (still Thursday evenings) is from 6 to 8 p.m. at Mr. Paperback in Ellsworth.
