Humpy’s campaign ends

NEW DELHI: Second seed K. Humpy’s campaign for the elusive women’s World chess title ended on Friday when third seed Hou Yifan successfully drew their second game to complete a 1.5-0.5 victory in the semifinals at Hatay, Turkey.

After losing the first game with black pieces on Thursday, Humpy faced a must-win situation to take the match into Saturday’s tiebreak games.

She began aggressively with white pieces, gained two queenside pawns by the 15th move but Hou Yifan was unperturbed.

The Chinese girl launched an effective offensive on Humpy’s castled king on the queenside. Hou Yifan recovered the pawns after a series of exchanges and eventually took the game to an ending involving pairs of rooks and pawns. The 45-move deadlock ended in a repeat loss for Humpy against Hou Yifan.

Hou Yifan’s victory also ensured an all-China final. In the other semifinals, Chinese girls Zhao Xue and Ruan Lufei drew their second game, too. The winner will be decided after Saturday’s tiebreak games.
