Samuel told the San Jose Mercury News that it “feels good” to win the title.
Samuel was taught to play chess by his father, Armen, who is a physicist.
He spends at least two hours a day studying chess moves and practising with his coach, Andranik Matikozyan.
Mr Matikozyan said Samuel was “really talented” and that the boy’s chess prowess had amazed him.
When he is not playing chess, Samuel likes to read fantasy books and watch television.
