Bulgaria’s chess star and former World Champion Veselin Topalov has dropped one more spot in the FIDE ranking list, reaching 6th for January with a score of 2775.

This is Topalov’s worst placement since July 2008.

In May, India’s Viswanathan Anand defeated the 35 year old Veselin Topalov to retain his world chess title after winning by the narrowest of margins 6:5 in Bulgaria’s capital Sofia.

The Norwegian “wanderchild” Magnus Carlsen has regained the top spot in the FIDE rating list after being displaced by Viswanathan Anand in November. Carlsen on 2814 is four points in front of Anand 2810 with Levon Aronian just behind on 2805

In the women’s rating, Bulgaria’s top player Antoaneta Stefanova is rated 7th.
