Calderdale B’ team played with a man short and still won by a clear point whilst the ‘C’ team beat Pontefract who are notoriously difficult and a tricky team to play but fortunately were lacking the strength in depth they normally produce.
Halifax surprised many in the Calderdale Evening League Division One by only losing on one board against Huddersfield ‘A’.
The Division Two fixture between Todmorden ‘C’ and Hebden Bridge ‘C’ was disappointing with Hebden defaulting due to an administrative oversight and a mix-up with the fixture. Courier ‘B’ fought hard for a well earned draw against Huddersfield ‘B’ and Wheatley were unlucky not to overturn high flyers Todmorden ‘B’.

The most effective way to begin learning to play chess is to start with an empty board, understanding the confines of the 64 squares and indeed the battlefield.
The next step is to learn how the various pieces move.
If the pieces are introduced one at a time, rather than having the board set up with both sides in their starting positions, it can be seen how effective the pieces are without the constraint of all the other pieces and pawns cluttering up the board.
If. for example we start with the two kings on the board, it soon becomes obvious that the game is drawn because the kings cannot “check” each other by being moved next to each other.
Remember the king cannot be taken, only be put in check from which the king must either be moved out of check or have another piece blocking the check.
More on this next week.
