A DAY-LONG chess tournament for kiddies and junior players will serve as the first ever activity for the local chess community in the Year of the Rabbit.
Dubbed as “1st SMOSAT Chess Tournament” and organized by the DepEd people in Cagayan de Oro, the five-round Swiss system competition will be held on Saturday, January 15, at the covered court of East City Central School in Barangay Lapasan.
And it has enticing cash prizes, trophies and medals awaiting the winners with only minimal registration fees.
“Kung sumahon, it’s still within the spirit of Christmas. Kay kami sa DepEd nag-carolling adtong pasko og ang kita were given to charity unya ang sobra we chose to sponsor a chess tournament,” youthful principal Angelito Felicilda of Iponan Elementary School said.
The top-three performers in secondary level will receive P1,000, P800 and P600 plus trophies with the 4th and 5th placers out to settle P150 each with medals.
For the elementary Level 1 and 2, the first three winners will get P500, P350 and P200 plus trophies with the next two best scorers getting P75 apiece and medals.
Level 3’s top-three finishers will win P800, P600 and P400 plus trophies. Fourth and 5th placers will be given P100 each and medals.
Audie Borres of P-1 Division Office has tapped national arbiter Jun Cuizon to oversee the event.
Entry fees are P50 for private school students and P30 for their public school counterparts. (Lynde Salgados)
