MANILA, Philippines – Filipino Grandmaster (GM) John Paul Gomez turned back Woman International Master (WIM) Nguyen Thi Mai Hung of Vietnam to create a two-way tie for first in the 3rd round of the 2011 HD Bank Cup Open chess championship at the five-star Rex Hotel sa Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.
With the win, Gomez goes up against fellow leader and 3 pointers GM Zhao Jun of China in the next round, who brought down International Master (IM) Nguyen Thanh Son of Vietnam.
GM Darwin Laylo , meantime, split the point with compatriot IM Oliver Dimakiling to share 3rd to 14th placers in the company of 2.5 points. This pack includes IM Richard Bitoon, GM Zhou Weiqi, GM Yu Yangyi, GM Wen Yang and Wang Chen ng China, GM Cao Sang, GM Le Quang Liem, Fide Master (FM) Nguyen Duc Hoa and Candidate Master (CM) Tran Thanh Tu of Vietnam, IM Goh Wei Ming Kevin of Singapore.
