The Franklin County GATEWAY Program hosted the 13th annual Chess for Kids Tournament on Friday, December 10, 2010. Over 230 students from all 12 elementary schools in Franklin County participated in the tournament. Participants in the tournament played three matches at the beginner and intermediate levels. Players in the advanced level played four matches.Students who won three matches were awarded a chess medal during the awards ceremony that followed match play. Each chess player also received an official 2010 Chess Club t-shirt and a Certificate of Participation. School teams were awarded trophies at both the beginner and intermediate levels, based on a score generated by the number of wins for the team and the number of players on the team. Advanced level participants competed on an individual basis. “Beginner Level Individual medal winners: Katie Bird, Jack Buckman, Noah James, Evan Stone, Jenny Fike, Autumn Fletcher, Tristan Pendleton, John Conde, Alex Gasca, Grant Dickerson and Benjamin Taylor. School Team winners: 1st place — Boones Mill, 2nd place — Callaway, and 3rd place — Windy Gap. “Intermediate Level Individual medal winners: Alex Harrison, Jon Meador, Dakota Wells, Hunter Law, Jakob Comer, Madison Stein, Nate Smith and Levi Taylor. School Team Winners: 1st place — Windy Gap, 2nd place — Lee M. Waid, and 3rd place (tie) — Ferrum and Glade Hill. “Advanced Level Individual medal winners: Jacob Holland, Ben Hancock and Toby White. The GATEWAY program would like to express appreciation to the students, parents, coaches, principals, judges, and tournament statistician Matt Mills who made the chess program and tournament possible. Thanks also to Benjamin Franklin Middle School for hosting the tournament, and the Franklin County High School Chorus for providing the holiday music.
