MANILA, Philippines – Filipino Grandmaster (GM) John Paul Gomez settled for 3rd place at the conclusion of the 1st HD Bank Chess Championships, Sunday, in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

The Biñan-based Gomez tallied 6.5 points on account of 5 wins, 3 draws, and a loss in 9 outings.

He finished 3rd after a superior tie-break over GM Le Quang Liem and GM Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son of Vietnam; and GM Zhou Weiqi and Xiu Deshun of China.

In the 9th and final round, however, Gomez yielded to Ngoc Truong.

GM Yu Yangyi of China, meanwhile, captured the crown after a superior quotient over fellow 7-pointer and compatriot GM Wen Yang.

GM Yu Yangyi drew with GM Le Quang Liem while GM Wen Yang toppled FM Nguyen Doc Hoa of Vietnam.

The other Filipino top players who shared the limelight were GM Roland Salvador who beat GM Tu Hoang Thong of Vietnam; and International Master (IM) Oliver Barbosa who defeated Wang Cheng of China. Both players raised their total 6 points, joining IM Lou Yiping and Lu Shanglei of China.
