The chess team from Hidden Valley Elementary School placed second in the 2010 Burnsville-Eagan-Savage School District Elementary Chess Tournament in December.

William Byrne Elementary School placed first while the team from Sioux Trail Elementary was third.

“The annual tournament allows top players in the district to meet and compete,” said Brian Ribnick, the district’s chess coordinator. “Coaches work with the players throughout the fall during practices at their schools then comes the district championship — sort of like a final test.”

Connor Van Dorpe, a Hidden Valley sixth-grader placed sixth overall and Alexander Gorton, a Harriet Bishop fourth-grader from Eagan placed ninth overall.



Hidden Valley’s Garrett Devine, from Burnsville, took the top award for sixth-graders. Kendrick Hjelmberg, a fourth-grader at Aspen Academy lives in Savage and plays on the Hidden Valley Team and took the championship fourth-grade trophy. Laitin Renner, a Hidden Valley second-grader from Savage, took first place in his grade. Harriet Bishop first-grader Erik Gorton took home the top prize for students in kindergarten or first grade.
