McHENRY – An open chess club is meeting Mondays at the McHenry Borders.

The group, which is open to all ages, meets from 7 to 9 p.m. at the store, 2221 Richmond Road.

Participants should bring their own boards.

The group had been meeting on Thursday nights but restarted on Mondays about two weeks ago, organizer Jeff Varda said.

Ten to 15 people have attended the recent get-togethers.

In the past, Varda said, the group has attracted chess players as young as 7, as well as those into their 70s.

The idea for the chess club began as a way to get McHenry High School chess club members the opportunity to play more experienced chess players, said Varda, who is a teacher at East Campus.

The group eventually turned into a club open to players of all experience levels.

For information on the club, call Varda at 815-385-1145 or Borders at 815-578-9330.
