Six members of the national chess team led by Grandmaster (GM) John Paul Gomez will be seeing action in the 2011 Aeroflot Open chess championship from February 7 to 18 in Moscow, Russia.

Gomez, fresh from placing third in the 1st HD Bank Chess Championships in Vietnam, will be joined by Grandmasters Darwin Laylo and Roland Salvador, International Masters Richard Bitoon and Oliver Barbosa and reigning national junior champion Paulo Bersamina.

“It’s a new challenge for me but it’s just like the other chess tournaments. More veteran players are expected to participate in this tournament,” said Gomez.

Gomez, Laylo and Salvador will compete in the Category A—a division that is open to all players with more than 2549 ELO rating.

A total prize fund 70,000 euro is at stake in the 12-day tournament with the champion pocketing a whopping 20,000 euro plus an invitation to take part in the prestigious Dortmund round-robin event.
