MANILA, Philippines â€“ Filipino International Master (IM) Oliver Dimakiling continued his winning run by beating Malaysia’s top gunner IM Mas Hafizulhelmi to remain on top in the on-going Penang International Open Chess Championships in Malaysia on Friday.
With the win, the pride of Davao City, playing under the banner of the National Chess Federation of the Philippines, notched his 5th straight win in as many rounds.
Dimakiling is a half-point ahead over compatriots IMs Yves Ranola and Oliver Barbosa who tote 4.5 points each.
Ranola of Caloocan City, subdued countryman Fide Master (FM) Julius Joseph de Ramos of Manila while Barbosa, who comes from Rizal, clobbered another Filipino bet FM Haridas Pascua of Pangasinan.
FM Christopher Castellano of Cainta, Rizal, meanwhile, defeated Malaysia’s Azman Hisham Mohd Nabil to raise his total to 4 points and join Pinoy IM Luis Chiong and Malaysia’s Yeap Eng Chiam for 4th to 6th places. â€“ By Marlon Bernardino
