Social gaming behemoth Zynga has acquired mobile gaming developer Newtoy, best known for the popular Games with Friends multiplayer franchise. Financial terms were not disclosed. Founded in 2008 by brothers Paul and David Bettner, who helped create the bestselling Age of Empires series, Newtoy brings with it mobile games like Words with Friends and Chess with Friends as well as five million active monthly users across the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. Newtoy’s McKinney, Texas office will be renamed The Zynga with Friends Studio and will leverage the existing Games with Friends franchise and work to build new titles for the Zynga social network under the leadership of senior vice president of mobile David Ko.

Zynga now boasts more than 225 million monthly active users, the vast majority of them on the Facebook platform. Zynga’s flagship FarmVille, a real-time social farm simulator played by about 60 million gamers, expanded to the iPhone in June 2010; gamers in 85 different countries worldwide have since played the title on their smartphones, sending over 100,000 virtual gifts each day. Zynga also plans to expand to the Android platform via Zynga Poker. The company’s revenues are expected to surpass $450 million in 2010.
